I came to work in the Research Department of the National Bank because I was keen to apply my economic studies in practice. It proved to be a good choice! At first I was a member of the “International economy” group where I was able to follow fascinating issues such as the economic development of emerging countries and energy market analysis. I then got the opportunity to take my career in a new direction as a Belgian labour market analyst. Here I am working at a different level on cyclical developments and more structural problems relating to employment.
Both aspects mean not only a need to keep up with the latest developments, but also the chance to make an effective contribution via research carried out by the Bank, macro-economic estimates or, more generally, contributing to the definition of economic policy. In the course of my various assignments I have been able to travel to other European countries on many occasions to attend working meetings or conferences. Those trips offer a perfect opportunity to widen my circle of contacts and find out what is happening in other national banks and international institutions. The Bank provides a pleasant and stimulating working environment, training facilities and career opportunities.
