Economists working at the Economics and Research Department of the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) are responsible for undertaking and reporting economic and financial analysis. Our team is made up of some sixty economists who specialise in different areas of analysis, as illustrated by their publications: see The research work that we produce aims to support the Bank’s monetary and prudential policy objectives, and to evaluate economic policy in general.

We offer our economists a working environment that provides the best-performing research and analysis tools. They have access to a wealth of micro and macroeconomic and financial statistical data. Economists are offered specialist training and the opportunity to take part in conferences; international research networks and working groups are also a key part of the package. We generally encourage them to maintain close ties with specialist economic research bodies, especially with other central banks and academic institutions.


Working withing a group of half a dozen economists on a given theme, you will be responsible for scientific studies or research into economic issues of interest to the Bank.

You will be expected to work autonomously or with others at the Bank, as well as in research networks and ESCB expert groups, or with other Belgian or international institutions. Your work will feed into economic policy recommendations and will be drafted with a view to publication through the Bank’s various communication channels, and/or in scientific journals.


  • Hold a PhD in Economics or a Master degree in Economics with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • proven extensive knowledge of the Belgian and eurozone economies and major economic policy issues worldwide
  • a clear and demonstrable interest in monetary and prudential policy, macroeconomic policy, and policies relating to energy markets and/or structural economic reform
  • advanced proficiency in the very latest quantitative analysis methods
  • The ability to communicate the outcomes of work clearly in both written and spoken forms
  • the ability to work autonomously and to show creativity, flexibility and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks and joint working
  • have a good command of English, as well as a working knowledge of Dutch or/and French.

Other desirable qualities : experience of working within an international organisation or a research centre, and any academic publications.

English-speaking candidates must undertake to acquire proficiency in one of the two national languages within two years of their possible appointment.
