Head of the Monetary Policy Unit (F/M/X)

Apply until:
05 September 2021

Environment

The Monetary Policy Unit is one of the eight Units in the Economics and Research Department of the National Bank of Belgium (NBB). The Department is made up of a team of about 60 economists who conduct research and provide advice on the economy and economic policy in Belgium, the euro area and on a global scale.

The Monetary Policy Unit has three main tasks: to advise the Governor on monetary policy, to contribute to external communication on monetary policy and to conduct research that underpins policy advice and communication.

Function

We are looking for a Head of Unit. The role is twofold. As an expert on the strategic aspects of monetary policy, the Head of Unit coordinates the economic analysis relevant for policy decisions and represents the NBB in high-level expert committees. As a people manager, she/he organises the Unit’s work and coaches the economists in the team.

In this role, the Head of the Monetary Policy Unit works closely with the other Units in the Department, with the other Services in the Bank (e.g. Financial Markets or International/Eurosystem Coordination) and with colleagues from other national central banks and the European Central Bank (ECB). Contacts with the academic world are also frequent.

Thus, as Head of the Monetary Policy Unit, you will:

  • represent the NBB as an expert in the ECB Monetary Policy Committee and in other external working groups or networks
  • manage the activities of the Unit so that the combination of your own expertise on monetary policy and that of the economists in your team results in high-quality output
  • together with senior management, define the strategic priorities for the Department, translate them into an action plan for your Unit and implement it
  • seek and promote cooperation with other Departments in the Bank and with relevant partners outside the NBB, for example in academic circles.

This position offers you the opportunity to work on monetary policy within the Eurosystem and in close connection with actual policy-making. Together with your team, you will provide high-level expertise at the crossroads between policy and research.

Profile

  • you hold an advanced degree (preferably a PhD) in Economics with a focus on macro and monetary economics and quantitative methods; you have a good understanding of financial markets and asset pricing.
  • you have demonstrated experience with research in at least one of these fields and monetary policy in particular; experience in formulating policy advice is an asset
  • you are passionate about the cross-fertilisation between actual policy-making and academic research.
  • you have the people-management skills required to lead and motivate a team of policy and research economists; you are open-minded, and a team player
  • you can productively challenge others and like being challenged yourself
  • you have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and you value clear communication highly
  • in addition to excellent written and spoken English, you have at least some basic knowledge of either Dutch or French.
